If you are on a South Africa holiday tour, you should certainly pay a visit to East London which is located on the south eastern coast. Lying between the two rivers Buffalo and Nahoon in the Amatole district of Eastern Cape Province, this city promises a wonderful vacation time for the travelers. This town comes under the Buffalo City local Municipality and it acquired its city status in the year 1914. This is the only town in South Africa that features a river port. This city played a significant role during the time of war between the British colonizers and local inhabitants. It was used as a supply port service to the nearby military headquarters, King William's Town. Soon a lot of people started to settle down permanently around the port area and this led to the development of the town. This area is dominated by the German migrants. You will notice that many areas of the town carry German names.

The city of East London, being relatively small in area, enjoys good economic status over the past many years. It features the second largest industrial centre in the entire Eastern Cape Province. Things to do in East London:

Enjoy the beauty of undersea life - As pointed out earlier, East London is famous for its beaches. There are lots of diving sites in the area where you can have the experience of swimming in the deep blue waters of the Indian Ocean. There are four major reefs in this region that are particularly famous as diving spots. Glen Eden point is the first one where you can have a shallow dive to observe the different fish species and other marine creatures. Sometimes you can even spot a Nemo there. Second is the Gonubie Point which would allow you a relaxing snorkelling experience when the waters are calm and cool. Only experienced divers and swimmers can venture out to the outer reaches of the reef. The Orient side is the third one which is the east part of the pier at East London. Knife Jaw and Silver Steenbras are a few of the fish species that can be spotted in this area. The best place where you could enjoy the view of undersea life with your children is the Mermaid pool. The maximum depth here is 1.5 meters. Boulder reef is one more spot that is not far away but the depth of water can reach up to 6 meters. So this area is not suitable for kids. Ragged tooth sharks and other fish species could be spotted here.

Hiking trip- A hiking trip will be ideal for those individuals who prefer to try more of the land activities rather than adventure water sports. There two hiking trails along the East London coastline; the Strandloper Trail and the Sundown Trail. This trail is over 60 kilometres and it presents spectacular views of the golden beaches, coastal forests, magnificent cliff tops and rivers.
